Unfortunately we have to change this game back to the Green Isle on the weekend of 24th -26th July. John O Farrell from City West contacted us long after the game was booked into his hotel, but just after it appeared on boards, to put all sorts of conditions on the game including closing the bar each night at 10pm. We suspect a sinister hand behind this as we have had the revenue ringing every hotel we have had a game in over the last 6 months. We are sorry for the hassle that this has given our players but if anyone thinks they are going to stop us having games in Dublin, think again.

Sad to see this happening in poker hope this might open the pokers players eyes to see what's going on around Shocking if I must say operators trying to put on a nice structure for a nice buy in for people to play. Played last week in city west no sign of bar closing last all nite ..

Hi Seamus,

I’m assuming the above quote is directed at me. It’s a shame that relations between myself, yourself and your business partners is at an all-time low however it is a product of your own doing.

For years I have supported events ran by you and your business partners as I have done for most poker operators in Ireland, I’ve ran satellites and advertised your events at my events and in my club.

For a period of about 4 months (approx. 18 months ago) I asked one of your business partners if you could look at a different venue (GreenIsle or Red Cow) as each time you held your events there it really effected my club, as someone who had helped your business partners in the past I felt it was a fair question for me to ask.

During this 4 month period I continued to support your events, I allowed your one of your business partners advertise one of your big games in my club the week of your event even thou I knew it would result in me having overlays for the week. I also moved an event which I was running in my club as it clashed with the 1st 100 Monkeys (at the time I advertised my event the 100 Monkeys wasn’t advertised anywhere), I was asked to move my event because The Grand Hotel,Tramore was only available on the dates that my event was scheduled and as my game was been held in my club I could those another date, so I moved my event to help out.

During the 4 month period I was told by one of your business partners that you would look at a different venue, ultimately a decision was made to continue running your events in the GreenIsle, if I recall correctly the quote was “It’s nothing personal, it’s just business”. Which is fair enough, business is business. But surely you can’t expect me to roll over and close my club every time you run a game there.

In the past 6 months you’ve made a number of snide remarks both here on IPB and on Facebook on threads and posts that either I have made or one of my business partners have made. With the one exception of your €100k guaranteed game I have never commented on any of your events, and I only did so on that thread as you directly quoted me from my league final thread.

As to the two allegations above, City West Hotel and Revenue.

City West Hotel.

Firstly I have an exclusive contract with City West Hotel for the hosting and running of poker events. It’s part of my agreement with them for the Norwegian Championships. Your booking was incorrectly taken in good faith.

I brought this to management of the Hotels attention and said while I was aware there was nothing that could be done with your June booking as it was already in, I asked them to honour my agreement with them in the future, i.e. not to take another booking off you. The conditions the hotel put on your event was a business decision which the hotel made.

Secondly if you had of done your due diligence (pre book bedrooms) when you booked the GreenIsle months ago there would have been no need to change the venue and now dates, so this is on you and not me.

Revenue.

I HAVE NEVER AND WILL NEVER contact the revenue. My business is my business and other peoples business is their business.
You mentioned that the revenue have rang every hotel that you have ran a game in the last 6 months, while I could be wrong I find it very unlikely that if anyone DID ring the revenue that the revenue would continue to chase you around the country if everything was in order.

So I suggest you have a look closer to home and stop pointing the figure of blame at me.

I have no intention to make another comment in this thread as I believe you and I having a go at each other on a public forum will only result in both of us looking bad.

If you need to speak to me my number is 0876448132 your welcome to ring me anytime.

Hi JP,

If my post was directed at you it would appear to have been directed correctly as you now admit that you were behind the City West coming back to us with unreasonable demands for the Monkeys game. You claim this was a business decision by the hotel but how could that be true as closing the bar would result in lost income. I also must point out that we believe that having an exclusive contract with the hotel is illegal and are looking into this with regards to taking this further. All clubs throughout Ireland suffer when a festival is on, esp the Norwegians, but good luck to you with running it as i think the players should have the best games available to them. As far as the due diligence with the Green Isle is concerned we had the hotel booked and bedrooms held but a management change resulted in this booking being lost by the hotel. With regards to ringing you i contacted you months ago with an offer to drive to Dublin to sit down with you and try to work out a schedule, that would benefit both ourselves and the players, but you stated that you would not be interested in changing any of your games and would only be interested in us moving out of Dublin. I think this is a very selfish attitude as Dublin is central to our players and our partners players travelling needs. We have had games in other parts of the country and will continue to do so but we will also continue to have games in Dublin.

Lads I'm not getting involved but I think ye all need to cop on and sort this out before every game in the country is destroyed, saying that it is illegal to have a contract with a hotel and we are going to look into this, in other words that could destroy the future of poker festivals by trying to destroy operators.
I know the both of you and think ye are sound, JP has been running games in this country with a long time at very successful rate with excellent structured games that we all love.

I really hope ye can sit down together and sort this out without having to get revenue, hotels and what ever other baloney involved, at the end of the day the players will be the ones effected. Have the balls to sort it out between ye. Just my 2 cent.

I mentioned in my original post that I wasn’t going to reply again in this thread. That was my intention, however I’ve received numerous phone calls, text message and Facebook message from players who are not happy with me getting this event cancelled in City West Hotel and resulting in a change of date, which now some players can’t make the new date.

I want to clarify I did not get this event cancelled.

The Hotel still have the booking in their system.

I had a meeting with the general manager and operational manager from City West Hotel to find out why (if any) unreasonable conditions were put on the event and why the bar had to close at 10pm.

The information that Hotel requested were;
1: Copy of Public Liability Insurance
2: Copy of Employers Insurance
3: Event overview
4: Name of event coordinator
5: Security plan
6: Table plan

Everything that the lads were asked to provide above I also have to provide when I run poker tournaments in City West.

With regards the bar closing at 10pm, the reason for this is because the room that was booked, the Verscoyle Suite is in a separate building (the leisure centre) from the main hotel which normally closes at 10pm. Anyone who has been to the World Grand Pirx Darts in City West which is held in the new convention centre the bar also closes early (I believe at 10pm also).

I ran a poker tournament in the new convention centre with Celtic Poker and Vegas Night 3 summers ago and we had no bar in the room. Anyone who played that tournament will remember that they had to walk over to the main bar in the hotel if they wanted a drink and were allowed to bring the drink back.

I hope this clears the situation up.

John O Farrell contacted us trying to say that the booking wasn't confirmed and we told him we had an e-mail confirming same. It was only then that he switched tact and put up a list of demands including closing the bar early. Anyone who attends our events would know this wouldn't suit as there is a bit of atmosphere at OUR events and our players like a beer and cash action. Obviously you had spoken to him, as you confirmed, and he was making it difficult for us. We think this would have been the start of a long list of hoops to jump through so took a decision to change the date and venue. We are sorry if some players can't make the new date but think we had no option. Some players who couldn't make the first date can now make the new date so swings and roundabouts.

Anyway we are now going to continue to sell the last 30 or so tickets and forget about the City West and their strange business policy. I have been contacted by a third party to ask would i be willing to talk to JP and said i would be so we will see where this takes us.

I completely agree and did offer to drive to Dublin for a sit down 6 months ago but was told there would be no point unless we stopped having games in the Green Isle so didn't bother. If we do sit down this time and the same conditions apply i can't see any progress. Everyone should learn to live and let live as no one has divine rights on poker in Dublin. ROOM FOR ALL.

Seamus,

I've just reread our facebook conversation from 6 months, I never said you had to stop running games in the Green Isle.

I actually asked if we could work around each other and said I would not clash (bearing in mind the clash was a game in my club) with any of your events in the future if you were willing scaled back some of your events in the Green Isle.

I also said that I was planning to run the Spring Series on May Bank Holiday weekend (which was already announced 1 week on IPB at the time of our conversation) I was aware that you ran a 1 day event with €25k guaranteed in 2014 on the same weekend and asked if you would willing to move to the June bank holiday weekend as a gesture of good faith.

A week or so later you announced the €100k game for the May Bank Holiday weekend and we ending up moving dates and venue.

We've both agreed to meet up and discuss the situation, I feel comments like the one above will only undermine any meeting we have and think its best if we both agree to stop commenting on the situation in a public forum until after we meet in person.

Approx 110 tickets are gone for this game already and with 10 being held for super satellite on the Friday night anyone hoping to play this game should secure their ticket asap. 50 Nordies travelling down so cash action will be fast and loose.
