Re-installing windows 8

Hard drive has failed on a laptop. On previous laptops they usually have a sticker so you can download and install the operating system with the code from the sticker on the laptop. It seems now the windows code is embedded in the laptop in some way.

Do I have any way of buying a hardrive and installing windows 8 without sending it back to the manufacturer? I have seen some mention that it is embedded in the bios and should auto detect upon install? Anyone ever done it. I'd just like to make sure before shelling out for a new hardrive. Thanks
