Shrap's Music King* Round 1 - Match 6 - Rap/Hip-Hop

*Sponsored by Keane

Let's get another match started!

Vote like this:

Vote: Player One

or

Vote: Player Two

A quick request if you can manage to bold your vote it's a good help when totting up the scores. If it's too much trouble on the phones and whatnot maybe do ALL CAPS or something to make it stand out a bit. We'll figure it out.

The assigned category for this match is Rap/Hip-Hop.

Let's get to it.

Player One, Rap/Hip-Hop:

Never fails to go down well (up until now anyway!)

Player One, A la carte:

For something slightly different. I don't know how these guys do it. They've have one of the most grueling gigging schedules around (playing Sugar club next month), and Pellegrino dances around playing a baritone sax that most would struggle with just standing still.

Player Two, Rap/Hip-Hop:

originally i'd gone full old skool, but then decided to change it up to something more accessible and just pure fun. Love this track, it just makes me want to get up and shake it. crazy to think it's 14 years old, it sounds just as good today, and just a great video as well:

Player Two, A la carte:

Quote:
These days i'm almost exclusively drawn to female vocalists, they just take me where few tenors and basses do. I love simplicity in music, i'm drawn to it. This is a prime example, of simplicity taking you some place else. No doubt some people will find it repetitive and boring, but over the 7 minutes it plays it makes me skip a few heartbeats.

Kendrick is good but a bit too obvious a choice here hoping for someone to dig a bit deeper. Outkast are probably my favourite hip hop duo/group but unfortunately youve missed 3 albums worth of stuff better than Hey Ya which is good but overplayed and basically a pop song.

Havent heard of either of the 2nd picks, both pretty good but player 1's pick was more my ind of thing, will be looking more into those guys!

All entries have largely equal merits but P2's Warpaint stood out as the one i need to hear more about.

Hey Ya is one of my least favourite OutKast songs and genuinely pisses me off listening to it.

Despite being well into the ol' hippedy-hop back in the day I don't really listen to anything in that genre anymore and certainly nothing from the last few years. In saying that I wasn't particularly impressed by either genre pick, obviously I'm well familiar with the Outcast one (was living in California when that came out and it was ubiquitous in bars and clubs at the time) but it doesn't do much for me.

So made my decision based on either player's a la carte choice...

Vote: Player One

Really, really enjoyed this; liked Warpaint a lot too but not enough to swing my vote.

This is a tough one. Agree with EH that there are other Outkast tracks that I prefer. On balance P1 marginally takes the genre selections.

Both a la carte selections are class, very little to choose between them. Possible slight lean to P2 on those making this a wash. I'll have to mull this over.

This is a close one. I think Player 1 shades it. I like all selections. Player 2's a la carte is great, but still think Player 1 edges it overall.

5-3 in favour of Player One here at the moment. Please get your votes in if you haven't done so already.

I'm swayed by nostalgia of seeing Outkast at ACL, two guys had massive cardboard dicks on sticks and during this song they were sword fighting way above the crowd. I like the warpaint song a long too

Not a huge hip hop fan, don't dislike the genre, just never really digged it, in general.

Although I get why KL is so good, that track doesn't really do much for me. Love King Kunta though.

Too many Zooz had too many sax imho. The sound is really cool, but would prefer it as a break or a middle 8, not as a lead. Kinda like having a full plate of roast potatos and nothing else. Delicious but a bit too much.

Hey ya is a really cool tune, if a little of a safe choice. Warpaint song was pretty cool, reverb heavy but nice.

A case of good music that I didn't really dig.
