    On the Bandwagon

I started this thread at 2+2 and I thought I'd start it here seeing as I live in the Green Isle.

At the start of November I decided to set myself a challenge of a positive red, blue and green line at the microstakes playing PLO.

Here are my results so far:

    and this month so far:

When I started the challenge I started at PLO2. At the moment I am playing PLO20 + PLO50.

My goal is to be rolled for PLO100/200 by May/June next year.

I am absolutely in love with PLO and hopefully those that are too enjoy my writing about what is undoubtedly the most infuriating, mind bending, pychologically testing and enjoyable poker variant I know of.

I will be updating my monthly graph at the end of each week and posting sessions and hands etc blah blah blah soon after they happen.

    Take it easy peeps.

Pretty grim session. Decided to check call mid strength hands to induce bluffs and called off my stack like 3 times. Check calling oop is bollox. My default is to bet fold so I don't know what the **** I was thinking.

This combined with losing all my flips and losing twice with AA vs AA AI pre resulted in a pretty terribad session. Live and learn I guess. Might start flatting 4b with AA so that hopefully I can get some folds on super gross boards that would smash my perceived flat 4b range

Anyway. Hopefully I run and play better today. Check/call can go **** itself unless I plan to check raise on later streets vs aggro opponents.

    Take care folks

That special kind of run bad when you run into the top of V range every fucking time and the board runs you down like a blind rabbit.

Dropping PLO50 and rebuilding to 2500 before I take another shot this time.

Also need to take things a bit more seriously. No more poker in my pants first thing in the morning.

      New goals:

      1. Showered, fed and analysis before I start the day. Every day...

      2. 1 video a week...no ifs or buts

      3. Clean and tidy work space

      4. 4 BI Stop Loss

      Bankroll approx 1500

      1000 to go

      Easy Game

Another nice winning session this afternoon.

Almost had to quit because of new stop loss target but the fish were plentiful and had a few stacks shipped my way where V stacked off super light.

          Bankroll now - $1658
$842 to go till shots at PLO50

          Long may it continue

Couldn't sleep. Played for a while.

Not a good idea. If I can't sleep again then I might just play PLO2 and have fun instead.

Ran way above EV. Got it in a few times as a dog but no other options really.

Started pretty terribad. Lack of discipline led to PLO50 to recoup losses which turned out well.

I think I have a clear edge at PLO50. BRM is a bitch though. I'm gonna find it pretty tough to stay at PLO20 until 2500

              Bankroll currently $1670

              $830 until shots at PLO50???

This is probably the best free site I know of about PLO. Unreal information and studies. Needless to say I will be working a lot with the info on this site. Note taking, implementation, evaluation as well as plugging in numbers for myself.

I also recently bought Odds Oracle from ProPokerTools which is just such an awesome piece of software. You can find it here:

                            All 6 max.

5 tables of HU and I think I would start bleeding from my eyes and ears lol

I think I am going to start designating a few hours a week to HU though:

                            1) I hear it's insanely profitable if your good

                            2) We end up in lots more marginal spots which is fantastic for developing our hand reading skills

                            3) Starting tables is awesome! I used to start tables playing NLH and end up with the juciest tables

                            4) You get to PWN arseholes who swing their dicks with HU4ROLLZ challenges

Also trying to get 5 tables at any one stake at hu plo is very hard on i poker

Haha. I do have a rather aggressive game alright.

I'll only play 2 HU tables when I start I think. At this stage it's important for me to have time to think through hands properly. If I ever feel like I am in autopilot I'll quit or drop a table. I like short sessions because of this also

Maybe when I'm rolled for PLO100 I'll start hitting the PLO50 tables.

Some good points there, Sounds like you really have your head screwed on, but i would suggest playin some hu 20 or even 50 now as the aggressive style is best for the stakes

Dropped a BI at PLO€50 so bankroll pretty much stand still at $1959.

Managed to play a very short session before the wee man awoke covered in pee today.
                                                    Ahhhhh fatherhood

Played well ran bad. C'est la PLO

Two stacks kindly donated to a maniac despite having him crushed when the money went in.

Would like to start posting more hands but I can't find the hand converter. I use weak tight. Is there a hand converter on this thing? The last hands I've posted I've rewritten 2+2 text and I really can't be arsed doing that anymore lol.

                                                    B

p.s. Should probably just find the hand converter myself. Watch this space ;-)

Going to try and take a few days off and get in some hard graft away from the table.

Haven't properly worked on my game since the start of November and I've often felt like I'm stagnating and auto piloting too frequently.

The lure of RB also had me adding a couple more tables meaning that I'm 7 tabling. Time to put this to rest. So much more +EV to get really f'ing good before I reach mid stakes and that means max 5 tables no questions. When I hit mid stakes I pretty much want to arrive and start destroying straight away. Then hit those high stakes fools and then start pummeling those upstarts at the nosebleeds lol.

I think I'll condense some of the notes I take and pop them up here. All good for the learning process and all that Jazz.

Anyway I'm planning to go over my notes to an old series that I love and also watch PLO Warriors. Love Sensei and KK

These are just some basic notes that I’ve taken that will get me keep me thinking.

                                                                  Benefits:

                                                                  1) Isolate weaker players

b When we 3b we knock out players behind us allowing us to play a pot HU with the fish

                                                                  2) People adjust poorly

                                                                  2) Hands that have good playability post flop i.e. they have a smooth equity distribution

                                                                  a) This is not exclusive to the flop. It also means we pick up equity on later streets.
                                                                  b) In low SPR pots we want hands that:

                                                                  a) Benefit by seeing the pot HU. Their value is in flopping combo draws and getting stacks in.
                                                                  b) Clean up our outs by forcing out opponents left to act behind us

                                                                  When to call?

a)Obviously there are some fish that NEVER fold

Things to think about before deciding to 3b or call

                                                                  3) Who is left to act behind us?

                                                                  a) E.g. Flatting AAxx with a maniac behind allows us to reopen the betting to a 3b and get stack in easier

                                                                  4) Does our hand dominate our opponents call 3b range?

This has probably been the most influential video for me in terms of my playing style. I was always very unsure about when and how to be aggressive and this video nails it.

                                                                                    Post Flop Warfare

Because the big pots play themselves the biggest winners in PLO leverage their skill in the small/medium sized pots.

There are a number of aggressive lines that we can take postflop that capitalise on dead money and there is a tonne of dead money in PLO because unlike NLH in PLO almost everyone is afraid of the nuts.

FLOATING – Calling a bet on one street with the intention of stealing it later

                                                                                    • Being able to bluff/semi bluff
                                                                                    • Being able to bet our hand for value

Floating gives the flexibility post flop that raising/bluff raising or folding doesn’t.

We can make life difficult by calling IP and forcing our opponent to play 3 streets. (If playing IP is profitable then we should play as many streets as we can IP with our opponents)

Cbetting and being called IP is just gross unless we have the nuts. If a player constantly puts you in tough spots, steal what they are doing and use it vs other players because more than likely it will make them feel uncomfortable too.
Making opponents uncomfortable is +EV because it increases the number of potential mistakes our opponents can make and it makes us tougher to play against.

Whether we choose to float depends on 3 factors:

                                                                                    1) Opponent tendencies

                                                                                    a. High cb frequency
                                                                                    i. Also important to take other factors into consideration
                                                                                    1. Cb in HU pots – opponents tend to cb more frequently when the pot is HU
                                                                                    2. Cb in MW pots – opponents play less “poker” in MW pots and cb’s are usually stronger

                                                                                    b. Barrelling frequency
                                                                                    i. Does V shut down and check fold frequently
ii. Does V barrel turn light?

                                                                                    c. Bet size – look for small weak bets
                                                                                    i. Target weaker opponents as bet size is a good indicator of hand strength. Make them pay

                                                                                    2) Board Texture

                                                                                    a. Against unknowns, dynamic boards are the best to float on
                                                                                    i. IP we can rep a tonne of hands that get there on the turn
ii. Dynamic boards are best because hand values are constantly changing and forcing opponents to bluff catch you on later streets will make you very tough to play against
                                                                                    1. Force your opponents to make a hand that beats us

                                                                                    b. E.g 872 2 tone, K96 2 tone etc are boards that get cb with a high frequency but can’t take much heat without a strong hand on later streets when oop

                                                                                    3) Hand Value + BD draws

                                                                                    a. Rule of thumb
                                                                                    i. Semi bluff raise strong draws on the flop
                                                                                    1. If we call our opponents may check fold the turn with hands that would have been willing to stack off on the flop
                                                                                    2. Bluff raising dynamic flop with 0 equity can get very expensive

ii. Float or fold weaker draws. We can gain more information if we call.
                                                                                    1. If they continue to barrel we can fold but if they check we have an opportunity to take the pot away.

                                                                                    2. The weaker the draw is the more opponent dependent our decisions become.
iii. BD equity makes a huge difference when deciding whether to float or not. If we pick up a strong draw on the turn we can:

                                                                                    1. Call with implied odds and hope to hit
                                                                                    2. Take a stab if our opponent checks
                                                                                    3. Semi bluff raise if opp takes a weak stab

                                                                                    FLOATING OOP:

                                                                                    1) Situations arise naturally

                                                                                    3) Don’t do it without equity

                                                                                    BLUFF RAISING IP/OOP (check raising)

                                                                                    • Buys free cards on later streets as V have to adjust by cb less

Boards to bluff raise are boards that are cb with a high frequency but where equity match ups are polarised:

                                                                                    1) Paired Boards – Hands that aren’t trips are drawing almost dead. The rank of the pair will determine the amount of respect you get

                                                                                    a. You are more likely to get looked up on 442 than on 995

                                                                                    2) Mono – Hands that aren’t flushes are drawing practically dead

                                                                                    a. Nut blocker or sets are good to bluff raise

                                                                                    3) Dry/Light boards

                                                                                    a. These are boards that hit players preflop ranges the least and if they do flop a piece their hand generally doesn’t play well when faced with aggression.

                                                                                    b. We can really leverage our stack by putting a raise in on these boards by threatening a stack off

                                                                                    c. If a flop can cause the top of villains range to feel uncomfortable on more than one street then we should be taking advantage of it.

As far as implementation goes you’ll discover whether you really are a weak tight player or not. If you try some things out and it doesn’t work or you lose money straight away and give up then you aren’t playing poker. Poker is a long term investment and despite the potential to lose money initially these strategies when used correctly show a profit overall.

There are a tonne of hand histories that accompany this video and I’ll probably post them up when I have gone through them again myself.

An example of using pre-flop range construction to sniff out bluffs and extract value.

V has a pfr of 13 so from UTG I expect this to be much tighter so his range consists mainly of big pairs and broadway.

Flop misses a tonne of his range there are few QQ and Q4 in his range pre. I'd expect him to jam with a bare 4 here to protect against AA with diamonds or Qx with diamonds so a min check raise makes no sense. So I flat and plan to call almost any turn.

My jam on turn is standard. Jamming flop makes no sense as V only continues with hands that have us beat.

Have to go......."the" little one is awake again

Red line has been pretty static for the last 15k hands and I'm break even pre-RB for about the same amount.

Not sure whether it's just variance or my game has changed slightly. I'd hate to think that I'm reverting to my old style of play. So easy for leaks to creep in.

Going to look at turn play soon as I think my pre-flop and flop game is pretty good.

When Ódhran settles after his wonderfully draining "fussy period" (lasting anywhere up to 6 hours and ending at usually 1am) I am free to play. I'll play until about 4am when I'll go to bed. This will give me time to get in ~700 hands. If he goes to sleep earlier then more volume obvs

I'm really looking forward to starting some good volume and making headway to achieving my goals for this year. I recently joined Cardrunners for Tom Chambers' material as well as, Vodkahaze and OMGbabyjesus. Really want to start playing more HU. I have jumped into a few low limit games and had a blast. It's amazing fun and I can see myself getting hooked

The series on post-flop strategy by Tom Chambers looks so fucking sick. There are 11 vids in total although it says there are 12 but the content just looks so so good. I can't believe I'd never heard of the series before. Really looking forward to grinding some heavy theory. Love theory. Love it!

Bedtime listening at the moment is "The Eightfold Path to Poker Enlightenment" by Tommy Angelo. So far it really is excellent. I can already "feel" (if that's the right word) my mental game improving which in a game like PLO can only mean a huge positive impact on winrate.

                                                                                                              Anyway....results so far this month:

Had to draw down $200 for groceries etc.

Probably the worst I have played since starting this thread. Went to tilt central was quickly $265 down and so did what every sensible poker player does. I moved up to PLO100 to recoup losses. Which I did

Despite my run good at PLO100 though, mentally I felt absolutely destroyed after the session. A combination of situational run bad, bad calls and preflop overplay led to a doubting of my ability and a dampening of my post-flop aggression.

                                                                                                                BR - $2513

I have invested in a coach. It was a toss up between This_Passing and vodkahaze on cardrunners. I have been thinking seriously about coaching for the last couple of weeks now so joined Cardrunners for free trial to check out their material. Really liked both their coaching styles and Andrew was online at the right time.

He also has a thread: http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/16...x-plo-1297803/

Will be doing 8 sessions with him. I've had 2 sessions already and so far so good. Although I'm winning at PLO20 I think it has been the right choice. I really want to make a great start into achieving my goals this year and it's great to be able to have my play analysed thoroughly by someone who is beating the stakes that I want to progress to this year. From what he's seen of my play so far he says I should be able to beat PLO50 and 100 which is an awesome confidence boost. Always nice to hear something like that, the importance of which shouldn't be underestimated. He's also a pretty nice bloke to chat to as well

Anyway...I have been working on my bet sizing a lot since we started coaching. I had just been mashing pot a lot which while fun, isn't really great as I'm looking to adopt more of a balanced style vs regulars and this will obviously be a required skill set as I move up. It also means we can put V in gross spots for a cheaper price

Haven't gotten round to studying any post flop theory as of yet. Too busy trying to bust up PLO50

Needless to say I feel much better about it. Amazing how much a line can tilt you despite winning a relatively decent amount so far this month.

On Andrews advice I have also started adding a juicy PLO100 table as well if it's available.
