    Tech question - redundant internet

    Hi,

I'm moving into a new place in Dublin and I want to set it up so that I have 2 internet connections, and that if one goes down, I seamlessly connect to the other so that I don't even notice the first one is going down

Can someone explain to me how I go about doing this?

The first net connection would be with UPC, haven't decided what the other one is [recommendations?]

I assume I have to buy some sort of special router?

    Thanks alot

I think you will need to start with a Dual-WAN router. Something like this

Draytek make some very good dual-wan models, been using em in businesses for 5+ years now with minimal fuss. Going for a cable operator and a ADSL operator would be a good idea, as if your exchange has a problem, using 2 adsl wont be any advantage. Also, get a dial up modem and or a PAYG Usb 3G modem, the dial up is very reliable, and not horribly bad for poker. Overkill maybe, but if your in the last 2 tables of a tourny, the €30 will seem like a great investment.

something like this then I imagine ? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Draytek-Vigor-...item255b3c9720

Once I have the 2 internet connections, is it as simple as plugging them both into the router, configuring router, connecting to it, and then thats it?

Also, recommendations on a secondary ISP in South Dublin near UCD to compliment UPC, ie a adifferent type of connection?

OK so based on posts elsewhere, it seems a problem will be that when the failsafe kicks in and I revert to the backup connection, my IP will then change. Does anybody have any information on this, how it will affect my play on sites? Will the switch be seamless, or whats the story?

If one goes down, then you will get disconnected from the poker site. You have to sign into poker client again, but this is generally less than 10 seconds, as opposed to over a minute in some cases reconnecting the entire internet connection. To the poker site, it will look as if someone has logged in from somewhere else , altho i dont think this in itself would be enough to raise security flags. There is a wireless draytek called a 2910v IIRC, as i say, slightly more expensive than standard, but worth it in terms of reliability and support.

Can anybody in the know confirm for me that I can use http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Draytek-Vigor-...item518e7ccaa9

In order to plug in a Cable connection (UPC) and a DSL connection (magnet) and that it will failsafe for me?

The way I see it is I have modem A from UPC, Modem B from Magnet, they are both plugged into the wall, tehn I plug them both into the Router, and my computer into the Router, and configure the router for failsafe. Then I'm all set?

is it as easy as that?

Full Tilt responded saying IP change wont matter, and Pokerstars "technical speacialists" dont really know, retards. I imagine it'll be aproblem on small sites like Ongame, but whatever, its still better than just disconnecting

Yep, its exactly as easy as that. There are 2 ways to use it, load balancing and fail over, load balancing could confuse a poker client, but failover works in the way you described.Use speedtest.net to find out which of your connections has the lowest ping, this will give you the most responsive poker connection, handy for betfair too if you ever wanna scalp quickly.

I would imagine that routers like these are not designed for the domestic market, and you end up paying through the nose for it. Although you could probably get a second hand one on Ebay for cheap. I'm sure there's plenty of small business who have upgraded or large ones that simply throw something like this out as soon as it goes out of warranty.

I got 7MB WiMAX from Imagine about two weeks ago at €50 initial, €15 a month, and I think €100 if you quit before 12 months. Before that I had RipWave from Irishbroadband (taken over by Imagine) and it wasn't sufficient for poker, although you could play most of the time.

It is very good atm but as they sign/convert more customers the speed might decrease. The signal is from the Stillorgan Park Hotel afaik. Not one interruption so far and good speed. It is wireless. You plug a 5" dongle into a USB port. CD install of software is super quick.
