Samsung Ace battery life and rooting

Recently got a samsung galaxy ace. Since installing a few apps, just skype,viber, adobe reader and dropbox... since installing just the bare essentials the battery life has gone to 7 hours max with very little use, just calls and browsing the net.apparently the advanced task killer app is a solution to the problem but wont run on my version of "gingerbread" so root the phone and upgrade the system to 2.3.6, mine is running 2.3.4. Can anyone explain how to "root" the phone. Any help woild be really appreciated. Im useless with stuff like this
